Based on some rudimentary typewriter experiments and postcard research Friedhelm Hillebrand concluded back in 1985 that 160 characters should be "perfectly sufficient" for a lean and mean communication channel. I think today he could not have been more right. We should all be glad an engineer did not work overtime to push the capacity to 1000 characters...
